Natural Wonder: Twelve Apostles, Australia

The Twelve Apostles is one of the most well-known highlights of the Australia's Great Ocean Road.

They are massive limestone structures that tower 45 metres above the tempestuous Southern Ocean. Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland beginning 10–20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs. The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks were left isolated from the shore. Behind the eight remaining stacks (five have fallen since their discovery) are majestic cliffs, around 70 metres high.

The Twelve Apostles are located 275 kilometres west of Melbourne in the Port Campbell National Park, approximately a four-hour drive along the Great Ocean Road.

Natural Wonder: Lake Hillier, Australia

Lake Hillier is an amazing pink lake on Middle Island, in the Southern Australia. It’s believed that the water’s pink colour is due to the extremely high level of salinity. This discovery was made as early as 1802, but there has been no definitive proof that salt is the source of its unique hue.

The lake is separated from the Southern Ocean by a thin strip of sand. Measuring just 600 metres wide and shaped like a footprint, this relatively small feature has a huge impact when viewed from a scenic flight or cruise. 

Located on Middle Island, the largest of the Recherche islands (11 kilometres from the coast of Cape Arid National Park), this striking phenomenon can be accessed by chartering a plane or boat with nearby tour operators in Esperance.
